Palm devices used to be hot couple years before; but company lost the touch and people lost the interest after Blackberry and iPhone. Apple not only created bold beautiful smart phone, but also they created market for application store. Clearly Palm could have done this before but they just missed the opportunity.
Yesterday, Plam launched its own app store; they joined the force with PocketGear, an app distributor which has around 50,000 smart phone applications since June 2008. By joining the forces with third party Palm already got its full catalogue ready from the day one. At launch, more than 1,500 developers already submitted their applications to its app store.
Currently, Apple and Google are paying 70% to cut to software developers, RIM is paying upto 80% and Palm will be giving 50% of gross revenue to developers and 50% will go to all other parties involved.
Palm has great device lineup and that is the only advantage they have right now over Apple, Google and RIM; but is it too late for Palm? Or they are just trying to catch-up their competitors. Partnering with PocketGear will definitely help Palm, but will it help them in long run as company is only paying 50% to developers to develop applications for their app store?
